Intel® Education InitiativeIn-service Program

The 40-hour Intel® Teach Program course provides practical instruction for in-service teachers from Standard One up to Form Upper Six in the Malaysian primary and secondary schools to apply technology usage in teaching and learning. The curriculum, which consists of 10 four-hour modules, enables teachers to develop a collection of themed lesson or unit plans that engage students in the use of technology to learn curriculum content, conduct research, compile information, and communicate results. Teachers also learn how to create assessment tools and align lesson plans with required learning outcomes.

Till end of 2005, there were approximately 15,000 Malaysian in-service teachers who received the training in integrating technology use in curriculum through the Intel® Teach Program train-the-trainer model in which teachers primarily learn from other teachers.

Workshops consist of 40 hours of hands-on instruction, covering ten modules of the binders available in English. The curriculum has been adapted or localized by the School of Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to conform to Malaysia’s requirements and needs. Topics include hands-on use of the Internet, Web page design, multimedia presentations, student publications, and development of showcase unit plan. Emphasis is on the effective use of technology in the classroom, research, communications, and productivity strategies, and working in teams to solve problems. The goal of the Intel® Teach Program is to train classroom teachers on how to promote project-based learning and effectively integrate the use of computers into their existing curriculum to support student learning activities. Teachers are provided with all the necessary curriculum materials.

The program uses the Train-the-Trainer Model. Master Facilitators (MFs) are identified by the principals of the participating schools. They undergo comprehensive training and then become the resource persons and impart training to other teachers in their schools. Intel® Teach Program certificate is awarded to teachers after successful completion of training and submission of unit portfolios.

Intel does an annual evaluation survey on the impact of Intel® Teach Curriculum especially in the area of integration of technology into teaching and learning activities in schools. Intel normally appoints a neutral third party evaluator to undertake this research. The research findings which are available for policy and decision makers upon request may be useful to provide a description of the state of technology integration and usage model in schools and among teachers.

As a part of Intel’s sustained commitment towards teachers’ and educators’ professional development, various enhancement workshops and activities are also organized for the teachers. These are aimed at providing insights and support for integration of technology in classrooms as well as to further promote higher order thinking skills and inquiry-based learning amongst the students.
